I am Allan James, expert fishing tackle guide for anyone out there looking for gear and wanting to know what to take with them when fishing in the UK (and overseas).

First up - what to take with you if night fishing, particularly for carp.

There are a few vital pieces of fishing tackle that I always take with me for a session.

Our basic kit consists of Rods, Reels, Landing Net, Banksticks, Bite Alarms, Unhooking mat, scales, sling, tackle, bait and camera. These items should always be in your car (or on your bike of course!) ready to go. You can purchase the lot at www.tacklesaver.co.uk, specialists for online discounted fishing tackle, and if you join the trade members club you get quite a discount including some free fishing tackle items.

Basic items and a bit more information:-

Rods: - Currently I use a Greys Platinum Carp Rod - cost is a reasonable £251.99 from www.tacklesaver.co.uk These rods are soft enough to allow for sudden lunges during the fight. Combined with a good technique it is best to have a fast tapered rod which is a bit stiffer in the action. The reason that this is important is due to the way the rod returns to being straight after the compression of the cast, basically when you cast the rod tip bounces back and forward until it returns straight allowing the line to pass through the rings more efficiently.

Reels: - For most of my fishing I use the Daiwa Emcast Evo reels which are a big pit reel with front drag. £44.99 at www.tacklesaver.co.uk

Landing net: - I use a Chub Snooper 42" Landing Net, which has been designed to complement the Snooper Rod - this net features a slim one-piece 6ft handle.

More to follow in the next article..

Allan James is the resident fishing tackle expert at Tacklesaver, the largest angling centre in the North West.
